All children need a passport for air travel. Passports cost $22 for children under three and are valid for three years. The average wait time is 20 business days for a passport, but you can pay $70 for 24-hour pick up in urgent cases.

“You need a birth certificate and a proof of parentage before you can apply,” says Béatrice Fénelon, a spokesperson for Passport Canada. Your child’s passport photo must show your child with open eyes, a closed mouth and (regardless of age) they must appear to be sitting on their own. The photo must also be signed by a guarantor that has known your family for at least two years.
