What Happens to Your Body During Pregnancy

You may experience a pulling sensation around your abdomen

Many women experience round ligament pain, especially during the second trimester. You may feel it as a sharp pain in your abdomen, hip or groin area, either on one side or on both. The round ligament supports the uterus and is made of the same muscle, so it can spasm and relax and contract in the same way, says Dr. Greenfield. "Typical situations that can cause the muscle to stretch so that you feel a pain include going from sitting to standing, coughing and rolling over in bed."

Round ligament pain should only last for a few seconds and sometimes it helps to change position slowly or to simply sit down and rest until it goes away. "Lying on the side that hurts can ease the stretch on the ligaments and make you feel better," says Dr. Greenfield.
