When to Switch to a Toddler Bed

What kind of big kid bed is best?
There are a number of options for a child's first bed:
- Toddler bed: These beds are small, low and child-sized. They have guard rails on all sides, and come in playful designs. Toddler bed dimensions are 63 inches long so they are significantly longer than a crib mattress (52 inches long) but smaller than a twin bed, making them the perfect size for younger children.
- Regular bed: A common choice is a mattress, box spring and bed frame (with all sides protected from fall-outs). Some parents opt for double beds so they can snuggle up with their child or siblings can sleep together.
- Mattress on the floor: A popular choice is a mattress or futon on the floor. This provides your little one with a big-kid bed, while helping prevent painful falls.
