Learn to Read your Baby's Sleep Signals

Typical sleepy signals
Every child is unique and has her own sleepy signs. Watch and learn the ways your child communicates that she is tired. Here’s a list of common sleep signs:
- reduced level of movement and activity
- becomes more quiet
- loses interest in people, toys and playtime
- rubs her eyes
- her eyes look glazed or unfocused
- she has a more relaxed jaw, chin and mouth (droopy looking)
- becomes whiny and cranky
- fusses or crys
- loses patience or has tantrums
- yawns
- lies down or slumps in her seat
- watches television or a movie with a blank expression
- caresses a lovey or blanket
- asks for a pacifier, bottle or to nurse
Your child may demonstrate one or more of these sleep signs (or do something entirely different and uniquely her own). The signs may also change at each stage of development. The key is to watch your child and encourage her to go to sleep when she is tired.
